Monochrome: Redefining Boring.

By: Rosie Fellig

Monochrome is a code in fashion that has recently been trending. It is a concept that challenges styling capabilities. Perhaps dressing in one color from head to toe may sound boring, but with creative styling, you can create a show stopping outfit. Monochrome outfits are cohesive, consistent, and simple. While still being interesting, the principles of monochrome can help you find the balance between posh and edgy. Here are some different ways you can apply the rules of monochrome to different looks.

The Ultimate Babe in Business

Turtlenecks, slacks, blazers, and heels are some of the most important pieces needed to create the perfect girl boss look. I love these powerful yet feminine outfits that are still comfortable and practical. The use of monochrome allows the look to be plain, posh and bold. In the picture of Zendaya's head to toe sage green moment, she used different pieces of the same color to add texture to her look. The contrasting lengths of the slacks and trench coat creates space around her. She still adds edgy touches like her seatbelt buckle belt and paper boy cap, although her outfit is still cohesive and peaceful.

Mix with different tones

You don’t always have to wear the same color head to toe, you can also just use the same palette. In the second outfit above, a pink glitter top is worn with light gold pants. It is clear that the girl in the photos palette is pink and gold, and she balances it perfectly. Her gold accessories enhance the pants she wears. In the first photo, the outfit is simple and relies on the pieces themselves rather than their colors. The girl in this photo includes neutral things like her transparent purse and semi transparent high tops to let the look be more casual. She allows her sunglasses to pop against her pink pastel outfit.

Bend the rules with white

You can always squeeze some white into your monochrome fits. If your main garments are statement pieces, you can tone down the outfit with no accessories and just a pair of some nice white sneakers. In the photo above, the purple look is simply topped with only one purple accessory (the beanie), and the sneakers and purse level it out with their clean white. If you love sneakers, you can stay religious with your color scheme for the entire outfit and then go crazy with your shoes.

Monochrome takes a lot of trial and error until you get it right, but when successfully done you can look fresh, posh, and bold all at the same time. It's a great concept to keep in mind when styling your outfits. Remember, the key words are anything but boring.
